This is a long due post, but my real job is taking all my time. I've a deadline May 8th and ... I'm in late ! Here is what I'd like to post at fools' day, April 1st:
You can see the rudder's halves, almost shaped. The large flat part underneath is a couple of cockpit seats' fronts, with peelply still on. In the following image all other flat parts are shown. I'm slowly inching forward. I hope to restart my work on F-22 more seriously in June. Bye !
Ciao !

DIY fiberglass quasitube (P10 vs G10)
Sanding the half rudder blade is a pain; it's taking too much time and sweat; in the meantime I experimented on the chainplate, where the "well-known" G10 tube makes its first apparition. I'm half way, just before lamination, and quite happy:
Here you can see my DIY quasitube, glued on the foam; I say quasi-tube because it was born as an "open" surface which looks like the letter P if you look at its section:
You transform it in a tube glueing the inner faces of the P legs; you need a long knitting needle (I mean that iron rod used by your grandmother to weave wool spun) to shape a perfect nanofillet inside.
To build the quasitube I put 3 C glass pieces between 2 peelply pieces and tightly wrapped this sandwich (once resin impregnated) around a 9mm steel rod; then I used a wood piece to block everything on the table and let it cure (in the following picture the sandwich is open for you to see):
I think this is the only way to be able to remove the steel rod, putting some wedges between the P legs so to enlarge the thing, and hammering the rod away. It was difficult to remove the inner peelply, however. Next time (bow web) I'll put an adesive tape piece in a strategic position, between peelply and glass ...
This "P10" is not a precision tube (and costs waaay less), but I think it's OK for its role, that is to isolate and keep the carbon UNI where it should stay, nothing more. Do you think I'm cutting corners ?
Ciao !

[OT] Google maps
Following Grant and Tor, I added a Google map to this blog showing Marinara, a fine marina near my town. When time will come (years !) I hope to find a place there to park my F-22.

More bulkheads, rudder started
This weekend I traced more bulkheads, but no lamination; ehi, these main hull forward beam bulkheads look like those from the ALIEN starship ;-)
I finished pre-shaping the single pieces of the rudder and then I glued those belonging to the stardboard half on a light piece of glass (160 gr/m2) to hold them together while finishing to hand shape them. I deviated from the plans, here.
It seems a very long and labour intensive way ... not sure I did the right choice; I wasn't able to find styrofoam with the right density, so I used my hot wire setup (see 10dic07 post) as a guide to hand shape single slices 15cm long (80kg/m3 fowm). We'll se what come out. So don't follow me ! I'm lost, too.
Ciao !

DIY vacuum gauge
Today I finished laminating those main hull aft beam bulkhead; as it wasn't too late in the afternoon, I did a little R&D ;-)
I found lots of old pressure gauges in my garage, but no vacuum gauge; so I decided to try this setup: a resin trap with an integrated "differential pressure" gauge; a picture says it all:As you can see, the left plastic tube is connected to the vacuum pump (from an old refrigerator) while the right tube will be connected to the vacuum bag. The inlet of the gauge is connected to atmospheric pressure, while the body of the gauge will feel the vacuum in the glass jar; this is the opposite of the normal setup. Using hot glue to seal the openings for the tubes while running the pump gives immediate results.
After running the pump for 30 seconds, I could see a 0.9 reading, that is: the atmospheric pressure was 0.9 atm over jar internal pressure. Now, is it correct to say that jar internal pressure was one tenth of an atmosphere, or 76 mm ? Mumble, mumble ...
A 20 inches vacuum means (760 - 20 x 25.4) = 252 mm ???This setup was just a proof of concept; it has costed me ZERO and was interesting to experiment with. I never saw it before on the net. I'll give it a "on field" test in the next few days, laminating some UD carbon. We'll see how it works.
Happy week end !!!
Buon fine settimana !

[OT] Happy Birthday, Delphi !
It's been an upwind course, but so exhilarating ... and it's still so !BTW: [F22] last sunday I started mixing resin again; main hull aft beam bulkhead pair under way :-)
Come si dice dalle mie parti: as avessom d'anghè, mo as divertessom.
Ciao !

If you want to build a boat ...
This is just a note to myself ...
If you want to build a boat, ignite your nostalgia for the sea.

Make me a boat
by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry
If I communicate to my men
the love of walking on the sea,
then you will see them soon diversifying
according to their thousand particular qualities:
that one will weave the fabrics,
the other in the forest will lay down the tree,
the other still will forge nails
and it will be some share which will observe the
stars to learn how to control,
and all however will be only one.
To create the ship,
it is not to weave the fabrics,
to forge the nails,
to read the stars,
but to instead give a taste for the sea.
Peace & Love

Bread and rudder
One week ago, sunday, we drove W-N-W one hour and an half to meet Luigi in Reggio Emilia; there we had a wonderful lunch with his family: his wife cooked the bread, too: delicious. We enjoyed everything. Then we reached Luigi's workshop, at the other side of the town, and saw THE BOAT (and the floats, too ;-). After less than an hour three more boatbuilders showed up: Daniele and Fausto (beginning F22 / F32) from Ancona and Fabrizio from Bologna (oneoff >40' catamaran, splashed three years ago). We all congratulate with Luigi for his achievement, asked zillions of questions and ... touched and kicked everything, as children. The beam mounts, in particular, have been deeply studied; can you imagine why ? It has been a fine afternoon. I forgot my camera at Luigi's home, so no photo reportage, sorry. Here is Calatrava's bridge, at Reggio Emilia motorway exit:Driving back in the evening we (my son Dario and me) discussed about dagger / centerboard; we're not so sure about centerboard now, as daggerboard does not seem a so big obstruction. Having seen a short cabin in building, instead, we still prefer the standard cabin.
Having seen first-hand how many things have to be done to build this F-22, I found myself a little "depressed" in the beginning of this week. We have built all floats bulkheads and the small main hull bulkheads; I've already traced the four main hull beam bulkheads on the foam, but not glassed them, yet, and I did nothing about the big "entrance" bulkhead.
The garage goes easily under 15 degrees Celsius, now, and the electric heater keeps running and running ...
So we need someything new to refocus: the rudder, for example; so I can test things before going to the bigger (and still undecided) dagger / centerboard.
Saturday I bought a aluminium "L" profile, 20 x 20 x 1.5 mm, 2 meters long (5 EUR, a theft), and started transferring the half section of the rudder:
These sections can be useful for hot wire cut (my choosen technique), but could help in hand sanding / shaping, too, as a [visual] guide. Unfortunately styrofoam in 80Kg/m3 density seems hard to find, so today I decided to try hand shaping.
Wow, it's hard ! Here is what I come with; please note: the two pieces aren't glued together, just "biadesive" taped, and this probably explains why the edges of the smaller upper piece are so damaged. I'll probably do more pieces in the next few days, unless I find HD styro.
It's been a fine week-end, not so productive, but ... R&D keeps time !
Happy building !
Buona costruzione !
